Susan C. Hirano Cancer C.A.R.E. Community goes live
|
It was a day of inspiration, empowerment and hope, as about 100 guests gathered in person and online for the launch of our Cancer C.A.R.E. Community, a patient support and empowerment initiative, on April 5 at our Sullivan Conference Center. In a surprise ceremony, the initiative was renamed for cancer “thriver” Susan C. Hirano, a UH Cancer Center Hope Ambassador, and the driving force for the creation of the initiative. The next event, focusing on “Mindfulness and Meditation,” will be held on July 5, at 9-11 a.m. at the Sullivan Conference Center. Watch this page for updated information, coming soon.

UH achieves ‘gold standard’ for human research protection
|
The Human Studies Program at the University of Hawaiʻi was again recognized as a “gold standard” research institution by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs. The recognition credits researchers like the UH Cancer Center’s Dr. John Shepherd, pictured at right, who conducts pioneering work in quantitative and 3D imaging of the human body, with continuing to meet high standards of quality and protection for participants. The accreditation also offers assurances of excellence to the Hawaiʻi research community. This latest accreditation term will continue until 2030, and will continue to be a symbol of our commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of research participants. Learn more.

The Association of American Cancer Institutes and the UH Cancer Center hosted a webinar on April 9 that explored the unique cancer disparities faced by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. Our own Dr. Stephanie Lim, pictured at center, moderated the discussion, and was joined by fellow UH Cancer Center faculty members Dr. Neal A. Palafox, left, and Dr. Kevin Cassel. The discussions covered how historical and cultural factors influence the disproportionate burden of cervical, breast and liver cancers these groups face, at higher rates than any other ethnic group worldwide.
